Muscat of Alexandria
Also known as Moscatel de Alejandría, Muscat d'Alexandrie, Zibibbo, Moscatel de Málaga
Muscat of Alexandria is a white Vitis vinifera grape with large berries, an evident muscat aroma, and an unusually broad role: it is eaten fresh, dried as raisins, and made into wine. In Spanish it is Moscatel de Alejandría; in Italy, especially on Pantelleria, it is Zibibbo. All are names for one variety whose large berries and capacity to accumulate sugar have suited it to warm Mediterranean viticulture.
The Muscat family contains several distinct, sometimes related varieties. Muscat of Alexandria and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains are closely related and important parents within the wider group. Their pronounced grape-and-flower perfume comes largely from monoterpenes, aroma compounds already present in the fruit. Dryness, sweetness, fortification, and bottle age can nevertheless make their wines seem very different.
History and identity
The variety is often called ancient, which reasonably describes its long Mediterranean cultivation but does not prove that a modern vine is the grape of classical texts. Its name has encouraged an Egyptian origin story. SSR analysis identifies it as the offspring of Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Axina de Tres Bias, a variety also catalogued as Heptakilo.1. That parentage points to a Mediterranean family history, but it cannot by itself establish the place or date at which the cross first occurred.
Its regional names record a wide circulation. French varietal authorities list Zibibbo in Italy and Malta, Moscatel Graúdo in Portugal, and Damaszener Muskat in Austria as official names in those countries and recognize them for propagation material in France.2. A grape for heat and for the table
Muscat of Alexandria ripens late in French reference conditions and needs a substantial accumulation of heat for its fruit and wood to mature well. Its growth habit is drooping and its vigour relatively low; it is generally short-pruned and trained as a goblet. Plantgrape also describes it as suited to drought and gravelly, acidic, or decalcified soils.2. Water availability, crop level, sun exposure, and harvest date govern the balance among sugar accumulation, freshness, and berry condition.
The large bunches and very large berries help explain the grape's table-grape and raisin uses. The European specification for Pasas de Málaga identifies Moscatel de Alejandría as the variety for those sun-dried raisins and calls out its large berries.3. From aromatic fruit to sweet wine
Linalool, geraniol, nerol, and related monoterpenes are important to the grape's characteristic muscat profile. Their concentration and form vary with ripeness, and many are concentrated in the skins. Fermentation and ageing then alter what remains perceptible.4. Wendy J. A dry Moscatel can therefore remain strongly aromatic while containing little residual sugar; a sweet version may gain weight from retained grape sugar without losing all sense of freshness.
In southern Spain, Moscatel de Alejandría is associated with sweet wines and with the sandy coastal ground around Chipiona in Jerez. For naturally sweet Sherry sold as Moscatel, must from overripe or raisined grapes is fortified before or during fermentation, preserving grape sugar, then aged oxidatively for at least two years. The Jerez specification requires at least 85% Moscatel must but permits it with or without raisining, so asoleo is common rather than universal.5. These cellar choices drive the change from fresh fruit toward darker, developed aromas.
Pantelleria offers a useful contrast. Under the island's PDO, Zibibbo is the permitted grape for Moscato di Pantelleria, Passito di Pantelleria, Bianco and Frizzante, sparkling Moscato, and the liquoroso wines.6. Passito is made from dried grapes, concentrating their sugars before pressing; the liquoroso categories follow a fortified route. These wines share aromatic fruit, but their sweetness, alcohol, and texture follow separate choices about drying and fermentation. Muscat of Alexandria consequently supports a broad range of warm-climate wines as well as table grapes and raisins.
