Wachau

The Wachau is a wine region along the Danube in Lower Austria, within the valley between Melk and Krems. Its terraced slopes and adjoining lower ground produce a wide range of wines, especially dry whites from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The region combines sites capable of substantial ripeness with cooling air from the surrounding uplands.

A Wachau label can describe both origin and style. Wachau DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus, Austria's origin designation) identifies regional, village, or vineyard origin under appellation rules. Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd are separate terms belonging to the Vinea Wachau growers' association and indicate different styles within its production standards.

River valley and terraces

Warm Pannonian air reaches the valley from the east. Cooler air descends from the Waldviertel to the north and the Dunkelsteinerwald to the south through wooded side valleys. Elevation, exposure, and the paths taken by this air make conditions vary within a relatively small area. A sunny river-facing slope and a site exposed to upland air can follow different ripening courses.

Weathered gneiss and other crystalline rocks underlie many hillside vineyards. Patches of wind-deposited loess and deeper material occur lower down. These differences affect rooting and water supply, while the slope and exposure influence the sunlight reaching the vines. The Bruck vineyard in the Spitzer Graben, for example, combines steep terraces with granodiorite gneiss and very little loess, making it a useful specific example of the region's rocky vineyards.

Growers built dry-stone retaining walls to make steep ground cultivable and hold soil in place. The walls use fitted stone without mortar and require continued maintenance. Their construction connects vineyard work with the shape of the landscape: planting and retaining a narrow terrace involves work that a broad, gentle slope does not require.

Origin on the label

Wachau DAC applies from the 2020 vintage. The consolidated Austrian rules consulted in September 2026 require hand-harvested grapes from the region and distinguish three levels of geographical designation.1. Gebietswein, regional wine, allows the broadest selection of varieties and blends, including red grapes. Ortswein carries a permitted village or local name and narrows the principal varieties to a group of white grapes. Besides Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, these include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and other established regional varieties. Village wines may have no more than a barely perceptible wood note.

Riedenwein carries a named vineyard, or Ried. Its principal variety must be Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, although the legal text tolerates up to 15% other quality-wine varieties. Enrichment to increase alcohol is prohibited, and wood aroma must again be absent or barely perceptible.1. Austrian Federal Legal Information System, DAC-Verordnung “Wachau”, BGBl. These provisions make grape ripeness and the vineyard designation particularly relevant to this category.

Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd

Vinea Wachau reserves these registered trademarks for its members. Its current description specifies dry wines without perceptible oak influence. Steinfeder has up to 11.5% alcohol; Federspiel has no more than 12.5%; Smaragd starts at 12.5%. Steinfeder and Federspiel can also be used for rosé.2. The terms give a practical indication of weight. Steinfeder occupies the lighter end, while Smaragd is associated with grapes left longer on the vine and a more substantial finished wine. Because the wines are dry, greater grape sugar is expressed largely through alcohol following fermentation. The vintage and site still influence acid balance and the character of that ripeness.
