Mtsvane Kakhuri

Also known as Kakhuri Mtsvane

Mtsvane Kakhuri is an aromatic white Georgian wine grape associated with Kakheti. It appears both on its own and with Rkatsiteli, adding floral and peach-like fragrance to a less aromatic partner. Pressed white and amber versions give different expressions of that fruit.

The fuller name matters. Mtsvane, meaning green, occurs in several Georgian grape names; Goruli Mtsvane is a distinct variety. “Mtsvane” on its own can therefore require regional context, while “Kakhuri” identifies the Kakhetian grape discussed here.

Growing the grape

The nursery Vivai Rauscedo describes late budburst, a medium-late ripening period, and sensitivity to summer drought. It also identifies powdery mildew susceptibility. Winter hardiness and summer water supply are separate considerations, so tolerance of cold should not be read as a general ability to withstand difficult growing conditions.

White wine and amber wine

In pressed white wines, Mtsvane Kakhuri can combine fragrance with fresh acidity. The National Wine Agency notes its sensitivity to oxidation, making oxygen management important when the intention is to preserve a fresh aromatic style. Blending with Rkatsiteli is an established use, while Manavi is a particular regional association for the grape.

Giuaani's Mtsvane Qvevri offers a documented example from Manavi. The winery reports six months of fermentation and maturation with skins in clay qvevri, followed by four months in oak barrels.1. This creates several contributors to the wine's character: grape aroma, extraction from skins and seeds, and subsequent oak maturation.

Such an amber wine belongs to the wider family of skin-contact white wines. Maceration can introduce tannic grip and deepen colour, changing how the fruit is perceived. Comparing it with a pressed white is consequently a comparison of methods as well as bottles. Kakheti's continuing production of both styles gives the variety present-day relevance within its historical home.
