Goruli Mtsvane
Goruli Mtsvane is a white Georgian wine grape associated with Kartli, including the vineyards around Gori and the Ateni Valley. It is distinct from Mtsvane Kakhuri, despite the shared word mtsvane, meaning green. The regional qualifier is essential when identifying the grape.
It appears in still white wines and in sparkling blends with Chinuri.
Vineyard identity
The Georgian Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture's varietal record describes yellow-green berries, medium-density bunches, and strong shoot growth. These physical characteristics help identify the vine but do not prescribe the eventual wine's flavour.
Freshness, blending, and maturation
The National Wine Agency notes sensitivity to oxidation and a role in Atenuri sparkling blends. Oxygen management matters when preserving fresh aromas is the intention.
Varietal production gives another view. MWINERY documents a dry wine made entirely from Goruli Mtsvane grown in Shida Kartli. Its account describes citrus fruit, fresh acidity, and a modest oak contribution. The example shows a contemporary producer putting the grape on the label while allowing maturation to influence its expression.
Oak maturation can add aromas and change texture, so a wooded wine should not be used to assign every sensory detail to the grape. Comparing it with a young, unwooded white or a Chinuri blend helps separate those choices.
