Colombard

Also known as French Colombard

Colombard is a white grape associated with the Charentes and Gascony in western France. Historically used for distilling wine, it also produces fresh, aromatic table wines, particularly in Côtes de Gascogne. Its fertility, productivity, and useful acidity explain part of that versatility. The aroma of the finished wine depends strongly on vineyard and cellar choices.

Identity and changing uses

Plantgrape reports genetic evidence suggesting that Colombard is a cross between Gouais Blanc and Chenin Blanc.1. INRAE, IFV & Institut Agro Montpellier, Plantgrape, “Colombard,” origin section. It belongs to the historical group of Charentais distilling grapes alongside Folle Blanche and Ugni Blanc, but is typically more overtly aromatic as a table wine than Ugni Blanc.

The revival of Gascon table wine gave those aromas a new commercial purpose. Plaimont dates its own renewed interest to a tasting of American “French Colombard” in the late 1970s. That producer account illustrates an exchange between regions rather than a new discovery of the variety: Colombard was already present in Gascony for distillation.

Its productive habit has also suited larger-scale winegrowing outside France. A 2019 University of California study treated Colombard as one of four varieties for modelling largely mechanized vineyards in the southern San Joaquin Valley. That is a different production setting from a Gascon aromatic white, even when both draw on the same grape's capacity to yield useful fruit.

Viticulture

Colombard is vigorous and fertile, with pruning adaptable to the intended crop. Plantgrape places its ripening in the middle part of the season rather than among the latest white varieties. Medium-sized bunches and berries can give substantial yields, but productivity alone says little about the balance or concentration of the resulting wine.

The reported results concern its trial conditions, not universal rankings. Site, planting material, and production target therefore deserve attention before making a general claim about its quality. Powdery mildew on leaves and grey rot at ripeness can be problems. Some berry shedding at maturity also makes harvest timing and handling relevant.

Aroma and winemaking

Young Colombard can show grapefruit, tropical fruit, and boxwood-like aromas over a lively acid structure. Volatile thiols contribute to this family of aromas. They are released during fermentation from odourless grape precursors, so yeast activity helps create the wine's aromatic expression rather than merely preserving a perfume already present in the berries.

Handling juice and wine with protection from excessive oxidation helps retain that expression. Aroma can change with yeast choice and storage, and a wine designed around fresh fruit need not benefit from prolonged ageing. In blends with Gros Manseng or Sauvignon Blanc, the proportions and harvest decisions alter both the aromatic emphasis and the balance of alcohol, acidity, and any residual sugar.
