Zweigelt
Also known as Blauer Zweigelt, Zweigeltrebe, Rotburger
Zweigelt is an Austrian red Vitis vinifera grape created by crossing St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It makes wines ranging from fresh, cherry-scented reds for early drinking to concentrated examples matured in oak. Its productive vines and adaptability helped it become widely planted across Austria.
Breeding and name
Friedrich Zweigelt made the cross at Klosterneuburg in 1922. After the Second World War, grower Lenz Moser promoted its cultivation, helping it spread alongside his system of high-trained vines. Rotburger is an accepted alternative name.
The namesake was a committed Nazi who joined the party in 1933 and headed the Klosterneuburg school during Nazi rule. Historian Daniel Deckers documents his antisemitic propaganda and efforts to remove staff he regarded as politically or religiously undesirable. Crop and ripening
The vine grows vigorously and bears generously. Managing the crop and canopy matters because a heavy crop can delay or weaken ripening. Pruning, shoot management, and selective thinning give growers ways to adjust how much fruit the vine carries and how well its leaves support that fruit.
Zweigelt buds early and ripens in the middle part of the season. Its good winter frost resistance does not remove the risk to young shoots after budbreak: Klosterneuburg's cultivar description records weak regeneration after spring frost. The grape is also susceptible to powdery mildew. Its relatively compact bunches require attention to fruit condition as harvest approaches.
One particular difficulty is Traubenwelke, a physiological berry-shrivel disorder that interrupts normal ripening and can reduce the usable crop. Zweigelt is especially affected. Klosterneuburg researchers describe its causes as unresolved and investigate environmental influences and changes in the fruit. Nutrient balance, including potassium supply, has received attention, but a single deficiency should not be assumed to explain every case.2. Fruit, texture, and regional styles
Sour cherry is a frequent aroma association, and firmer examples can have a substantial tannic structure. The grape's range allows producers to choose between wines that emphasize youthful fruit and wines with the concentration to support longer maturation.
In a lighter style, restrained extraction can keep tannin supple. A riper crop and greater extraction can produce more weight and grip, while oak maturation adds another influence on aroma and texture. These choices help explain why two varietal Zweigelts can differ markedly in body and readiness to drink.
Carnuntum and the country around Lake Neusiedl are associated with fuller examples, although site and producer decisions create substantial variation within each area. Zweigelt also enters blends, allowing its fruit and structure to be combined with other red varieties.
