Solaris
Solaris is an early-ripening white grape that has become useful to growers in northern Europe. Its capacity to accumulate sugar in a short season helps explain its role in Swedish wine, while disease resistance addresses a separate challenge: keeping the crop healthy in a humid climate.
Vineyard traits
The State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg records the pedigree as Merzling crossed with the breeding selection Gm 6493.1. Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg, “Solaris,” breeder profile. Its profile describes very early ripening, vigorous growth, large leaves, and a tendency toward a dense canopy. Early budbreak also makes the timing of spring cold relevant.
Managing that growth helps expose the crop and maintain airflow. Early maturity gives a grower options, but the harvest decision still has to balance sugar, acidity, aroma, and berry condition. The breeder describes wines with body and fruit, including the possibility of sweet styles.
Swedish expressions
Kullabergs Vingård gives Solaris a central role in several wines. The estate explains that it uses the grape for ripeness and depth in blends, alongside Souvignier Gris and aromatic Muscaris. The estate's 2025 vintage account records a cold start to summer, humid conditions, canopy opening, and a lower-than-expected crop. This is a useful counterweight to an uncomplicated story of northern opportunity: a variety that ripens early still faces difficult flowering weather and wet summers. Swedish Solaris represents an established set of grower and cellar choices, with considerable variation between seasons and styles.
