Vayots Dzor
Vayots Dzor is a mountainous wine region in southeastern Armenia, centered on valleys including that of the Arpa River. It is a central contemporary home of Areni red wine and Voskehat white wine. Its significance includes both old vineyard material and producers developing distinct modern expressions of local grapes.
Mountain vineyards
The region contains large differences in height, exposure, and terrain. Vineyards occupy valleys and slopes rather than the entire mountainous landscape. Dry conditions and elevation shape the growing season, but ripening, autumn rain, and winter cold remain practical concerns. Altitude is one part of that environment, alongside sun exposure and the site's ability to supply water.
A specific vineyard example is more informative than a single regional number. Storica's technical sheet for Zulal's 2019 Voskehat identifies fruit from Aghavnadzor at about 1,400 metres, on a south-facing plot with limestone and volcanic material. It records old, own-rooted vines. Those details describe the source of that wine; they should not be generalized to every vineyard in Vayots Dzor.
Local grapes in contemporary wine
Zulal's Voskehat was fermented in stainless steel and bottled from tank, giving readers an example in which the grape's fruit and texture can be considered without barrel-derived flavor. Areni supplies a red-wine counterpart, with producers making different choices about extraction and maturation.
The region's contemporary importance comes from those continuing choices: which local grapes to cultivate, which parcels to preserve, and what wines to make from them. Its mountain setting connects these wines, while the grape and producer determine much of their individual character.
