Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a dark-skinned grape associated especially with Friuli. The full name, referring to its red bunch stalk, is useful: Refosco has been applied to several vines, and a bottle or planting described only by that shorter name needs further identification.

Its wines can combine deep colour, firm tannin and freshness. They range from fruit-led reds to substantial wines given extended maturation. This is one of the local grapes that makes Friuli's red-wine landscape more varied than an account centred on Merlot would suggest.

Ripening a generous crop

The vine buds early and ripens late in Rauscedo's technical account. That leaves exposure to spring frost at one end of the season and a need for sufficient autumn ripening at the other. Vigorous growth and generous cropping can further delay maturity on fertile, cool ground.

Good exposure, appropriate pruning and management of the green canopy are therefore consequential choices. Crop load must fit the site's ability to ripen fruit; a large harvest is useful only if it reaches the balance intended for the wine. Rauscedo also notes susceptibility to powdery mildew and bunch-stem drying.

Extraction and time

Dark colour does not reveal how a wine's tannins will feel. Skin contact, ripeness and maturation all shape that texture. Ronchi di Cialla provides a documented example of the more patient approach: its Refosco comes from the Roncjs hillside vineyard in the Cialla valley near Prepotto, harvested by hand in the first half of October.

The estate specifies four weeks of maceration, maturation in French and Slavonian oak, and an extended period in bottle before release. That sequence helps explain why this wine should be understood differently from a red pressed early and bottled promptly for its primary fruit. The estate's long aging predictions are producer expectations, not a promise for every Refosco.

Regional context

Friuli Colli Orientali remains a useful point of orientation for the grape. It sits alongside Schioppettino, Pignolo and Tazzelenghe in the region's local red repertoire. Comparing these wines from identified vineyards and producers is more informative than treating “Friulian red” as a single style.
