Caíño Tinto
Also known as Borraçal
Caíño Tinto is a dark-skinned Vitis vinifera variety of Atlantic northwestern Iberia. It is grown in Galicia under its Spanish name and in northern Portugal as Borraçal. The variety is vigorous yet often gives small, irregular crops, ripens late, and retains substantial acidity. Those traits make it demanding to grow but useful in the multi-grape red wines traditional on both sides of the lower Miño and Minho border.
Its role is usually complementary rather than dominant. Caíño Tinto can bring freshness and aromatic lift to a blend, while earlier-ripening or more deeply coloured grapes supply weight, alcohol, or colour. Single-variety bottlings do exist, but they expose the central challenge clearly: reaching enough fruit and tannin maturity in a mild, wet climate without losing healthy grapes while waiting.
Identity and history
Caíño is not one grape. Caíño Bravo, Caíño Longo, Caíño Blanco, and other similarly named vines include genetically distinct cultivars. Modern genetic records instead match Caíño Tinto with Portuguese Borraçal; Caíño Redondo and Tinta Femia have also been applied to this genotype in parts of Galicia.[1] The broad family of names reflects a shared regional history, not biological interchangeability.
The original seedling cannot be assigned confidently to either modern Spain or Portugal. Galicia's viticultural research station records the name Cachiño at Boiro in 1914 and notes that the first Rías Baixas regulations used Caíño Tinto in 1987. Portuguese and international records establish Borraçal as the same variety across the border. It is therefore more useful to understand Caíño Tinto as a grape of the Galician–northern Portuguese borderland than to turn incomplete documentation into a precise birthplace.
Viticulture in an Atlantic climate
Galician records describe both budding and ripening as late; the Vinho Verde commission rates Borraçal's maturity from middle to late. The difference is partly one of local comparison and observation. In either case, it needs a long season. A warm, well-exposed site can help sugar and tannins advance, whereas a cool or shaded parcel may reach the autumn with firm acidity but limited physiological maturity.
That timing is consequential in Atlantic Galicia and the Vinho Verde region. Mild temperatures help slow acid loss, but abundant humidity favours fungal disease, and rain near harvest can damage fruit. Caíño Tinto is reported as susceptible to powdery mildew and, depending on the record, downy mildew, sunburn, and bunch rot. Open canopies and suitable exposure can improve airflow and ripening, but removing too much shade may increase sun damage. Site and season therefore matter more than a simple claim that the grape is well adapted to rain.
Its reputation for low yields does not come from weak growth. Borraçal is described in Portugal as vigorous and reasonably fertile, but its bunches are small and fruit set can be irregular, with both failed fertilization and small, seedless berries reducing the crop. The Galician institutional record instead rates yield as medium.[2] Clone, pruning, flowering weather, and site can reconcile these accounts: low or erratic production is common enough to shape the grape's economics, but it is not a fixed output in every vineyard.
Acidity, wine character, and blending
High acidity is Caíño Tinto's most consistent structural signature. The Vinho Verde commission specifically attributes this to musts naturally rich in malic acid, while Galician observations also report elevated total acidity. Late ripening reinforces the impression: grapes may still combine modest sugar with pronounced acidity when autumn conditions force the harvest. Warmer exposure, a smaller crop, or a longer season can bring more breadth, so the result is not invariably lean.
The wines are generally ruby-coloured rather than opaque, with fresh fruit more useful as a broad reference than any fixed list of aromas. Tannin can feel firm when fruit is only just ripe or extraction is forceful. Harvest date, fermentation temperature, skin contact, and malolactic fermentation—which converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid—can all change the balance. A varietal wine can consequently range from light and incisive to more structured, without ceasing to reflect the grape.
Blending turns these apparent limitations into functions. In northern Portugal, the regional commission explicitly describes Borraçal as a red-blend grape that contributes vivacity. Vinhão, Espadeiro, Amaral, and other local varieties can alter colour, ripeness, tannin, and aroma according to the place and intended style. Ribeiro likewise has a long tradition of blending in proportions that are not legally fixed. Its current specification classifies Caíño Tinto among the principal red varieties, alongside grapes including Mencía, Brancellao, Espadeiro, and Sousón.[3] The point of such a blend is balance, not a recipe in which each grape always performs one role.
Where it is grown
In Galicia, Caíño Tinto follows an Atlantic corridor from the Ulla and Barbanza areas south through Pontevedra and along the Miño, with further plantings in western Ourense. Rías Baixas authorizes it for red wine and sets a lower maximum crop for Caíño Tinto than for its other red varieties.[4] Ribeiro, farther inland, is a transition zone: Atlantic influence remains, but warmer and drier conditions can make late ripening less precarious. The grape is also recognized in Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras, though it is usually a minor component beside better-established reds.
Across the Minho, Borraçal belongs to the Vinho Verde denomination. Current rules authorize it throughout the denomination and in each of its nine named subregions.[5] The legal breadth should not be mistaken for uniform performance. Coastal humidity, inland warmth, river-valley shelter, elevation, and exposure change the odds of ripening a late grape. Its persistence across this varied territory is best explained by its usefulness in blends: even where it struggles to make a complete wine alone, acidity and freshness can be valuable parts of a regional red.
